ENGLISH
On the occasion of the exhibition Lithographic Landscapes there is a special offer for the readers of my newsletter and website.
I’m very happy to share this series with you after four years of hard work on it.
Over the past four years I have made one of these lithographs every year. Each in an edition of 20 pieces on Simili Japon paper, image size 9 x 14 centimeters.
The subjects are, just like my paintings, personal. Below you will find more information about each lithograph individually.
First a little more about the lithography process and my experience with it. At the art academy I practiced with this technique, like all graphic techniques came along.
Yet lithography interested me the least at that time. If I had known then that so much more was possible on such a stone than just drawing with a pencil, or simply printing a photo image, then that fire might have been fanned sooner.
Be that as it may, when I met my love Frank, I automatically gradually developed a relationship with lithography. Actually, it couldn’t be otherwise. I don’t know many people who are as passionate about a profession as he is. And this is the profession par excellence… an ancient craft, a complicated and labor-intensive form of printing, the origin of today’s printing press.
Go work on a lithographic stone and I’ll tell you who you are.
Damn it. What resistance I encountered.
Because as a painter I naturally wanted to work with tushe. The washed ink is pretty much the most difficult technique on the litho stone.
We didn’t have that at the academy. And now I know why.
I believe that after the first print where I worked with tushe (when the drawing had come about so magically on the stone, and I stood there, staring at the printing press, to print some more on paper… and after the first print it turned out that the stone had started to ‘bleed’, so in other words.. all the work had been for nothing) it took me two years before I touched a stone again, in Frank’s workshop.
This was the start of this mini-series. Our dog Summer, in a simple hand-sketched line, with the combination of a tushe.
I understand the technique a bit now, but I still leave most of the technical stuff and the printing itself to Frank. Because if you want to master that, it will take you a bit longer.
Do you want to know more about the technique? In this link you will find a nice explanation with photos / videos about the entire process: Lithography
Do you want to buy one of the lithographs below? They are 80 euros each. Order by email
This offer is only valid during the month of September: If you buy all four, they will cost 250 euros together, and you will receive a custom-made passe-partout.
This way you can change the print, because all four fit.
The size of the passe-partout is 29.7 x 21, so A4 format. This fits in an A4 format frame, as well as in a 20 x 30 cm frame (crop the sides slightly)
Or another size passe-partout of your choice.
‘Summer’, 2020
Our Spanish podenco Summer lived here with me for half a year. Every time I look at her, I am amazed by her beautiful slender body, so perfectly proportioned, where the muscles and tendons are so clearly visible. How gracefully she jumps when she hears or sees a mouse in the tall grass. And I always laugh when she, just like a deer, jumps up with the help of all four of her legs. This print was made with two printing runs (two different stones). One with a line drawing, the other with only tushe.
‘Empieza la música’, 2021
Corona.
Corona. During the lock-downs my sense of freedom became so strong that it even became the subject of my paintings. ‘Let the music begin’ is the Spanish title of the series I was working on. Imaginarily I was sitting in my cabin in the woods… waiting for all the violence of the world to break loose again in all its intensity, and for all the peace to be over again. Then I’ll just enjoy it for a while longer, there in my secret hermit’s nest. I colored the window by hand, so that it looks like there is light inside the cabin.
‘Cultivated Nature’, 2022
Nature, and the influence of man. This is the overall theme of my paintings, a never-ending source of inspiration. This print is made with three stones (pressure courses). The line in green, a green tushe and a red tushe.
‘At the beginning of the day’ is the title in Spanish. The special light in our little house in Spain. The mixed feelings of staying here, I have already described in my newsletters. This lithograph is drawn entirely with litho pencil. It was difficult to get the same atmosphere as the painting I had made, with the same depiction. But I succeeded. It wasn’t until I had been drawing for a few hours that I discovered that there was a scratch on the stone that hadn’t been removed during the grinding of the stone. Knowing that starting on a new stone would never portray the same atmosphere, I finished the drawing. After all, imperfection is also the beauty of life, right? This is my favorite of the four, even though it consists of only one printing pass.
